We are very excited to announce our 7th AG conference (Conference of AG Animation or in short CAGA) which will take place from September 9 to 11, 2024 in collaboration with The Animation Workshop/VIA University College at Aalborg University, Denmark. The title and topic of the conference is „The (R)Evolution of Animation: Current Challenges and Future Directions“ an we are looking forward to many interesting keynotes and presentations.

Virtual Symposium „Animation & Politics in a Globalized World“ (October 28-29)

We are inviting our colleagues, practitioners and interested researchers to our 2-day online symposium „Animation & Politics in a Globalized World“ (October 28–29, 2021).

In the symposium, speakers from across the world will present their research and their art works on animation and politics. We are happy to announce our two keynote speakers Eric Herhuth and Esther Leslie. The event is organized by Dr. Erwin Feyersinger (Universität Tübingen), Andrea Polywka (Philipps-Universität Marburg), and Dr. Maike Sarah Reinerth (Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, Potsdam). It is hosted by AG Animation (a SIG of the German Society for Media Studies), the DFG-Network Animation and Contemporary Media Culture, and the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, Potsdam, and sponsored by the Documentary SIG of the Society for Animation Studies (SAS).

Tagung der AG Animation unter dem Titel Political Animation – Animation Politics auf 2021 zu verschieben. Wir werden das neue Datum zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt bekannt geben und den Call for Papers erneut veröffentlichen.

CfP SAS Symposium 2018: Animation and Philosophy

An academic symposium at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film and FMX 2018 in collaboration with the Society for Animation Studies, the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, the Department of Media Studies at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, the AG Animation and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart.

Conference date and venue: Wednesday April 25 2018 at the Literaturhaus Stuttgart, 9.30–18.00 – only a short walk away from ITFS and FMX.

The symposium aims to be highly interdisciplinary and international in nature, bringing together scholars, students, academics and artists from diverse fields of research and professional practice. You can look forward to a day of highly engaging presentations that negotiate the topic animation and philosophy from a wide variety of angles – bridging art, theory and technology.

Opening keynote speaker will be Ülo Pikkov, author of: “Animasophy – Theoretical Writings on the Animated Film.“

“By developing ‘animasophy’, a more philosophical approach in the practice and critique of animation, we are developing something that is quintessentially human. In contrast to other mammals, the human kind is capable of abstract thinking. Birds and animals live in the present, but a human being can represent both the past and the future, construct symbols and tell stories. Men are the only mammals who can be fascinated by abstract texts, by playing with dolls or by the drama of an animated film. Therefore, we could say that animasophy embodies the essence of our humanity.”

The symposium is free to attend for anybody with a professional accreditation or festival pass for either the ITFS or FMX. Day tickets for the symposium only will also be available for 15 Euro at the box office on April 25.

AG Publikation: Im Wandel … Metamorphosen der Animation

Wir freuen uns die nunmehr zweite Publikation der AG Animation ankündigen zu dürfen, die unter dem Titel „Im Wandel … Metamorphosen der Animation“ die Ergebnisse der AG-Jahrestagung 2014 in Tübingen zusammenfasst. Der von Julia Eckel, Erwin Feyersinger und Meike Uhrig herausgegebene Sammelband untersucht dabei das spezifische Verhältnis von Animation und verschiedenen Transformationsprozessen. In den Beiträgen werden (Ver-)Wandlungen von Formen und Körpern, von Zeit und Raum, aber auch der Wandel von wissenschaftlichen Definitionen und (inter-)kulturellen Bezügen untersucht. Ziel ist es, die Wandlungsfähigkeiten der Animation in den Blick zu nehmen und ihre Umgestaltungs-, Umsetzungs- und Übersetzungsleistungen als Phänomene genauer zu beschreiben.

Stolz präsentieren wir die erste offizielle Publikation der AG Animation: Der Sammelband In Bewegung setzen … ist aus einer gleichnamigen Konferenz hervorgegangen, die 2012 als Kooperation der AG Animation und der Arbeitsstelle für grafische Literatur in Hamburg veranstaltet wurde. Die Aufsätze kombinieren ausgewählte Beiträge von Konferenzteilnehmer*innen sowie geladenen Autor*innen und gehen auf die Relevanz und Ästhetik von Animation in verschiedenen medialen Zusammenhängen ein. Animation bewegt Bilder, Emotionen, die Kunst, die Industrie und wandelt auch die Forschung: sie stellt traditionelle Disziplinen und Theorien des (Audio-)Visuellen vor neue Herausforderungen. Die fünf Panels stehen im thematischen Zusammenhang mit Schwerpunkten des World Festival of Animated Film, Animafest Zagreb: Animation Awards, Animation in the Raw, Zagreb School of Animation, Currents and Trends in Contemporary Animation, Animation and Games.

Internationales Trickfilm Festival Stuttgart | 26.04.-01.05.2016

Vom 26. April bis 01. Mai 2016 wird Stuttgart für sechs Tage und Nächte zum weltweiten Zentrum des Trickfilms. Das Internationale Trickfilm-Festival Stuttgart (ITFS) zeigt auch in diesem Jahr wieder die ganze Bandbreite des aktuellen Animationsfilmschaffens mit Schnittstellen zu Architektur, Kunst, Design und Comedy. Mit der Game Zone beschäftigt sich das ITFS zudem besonders intensiv mit Transmedia und der Konvergenz von Animation und Computerspielen.

Auch die AG Animation wird beim ITFS erneut im Rahmen des SAS Symposiums aktiv sein, das in diesem Jahr unter dem Themenschwerpunkt „Narrative Structures and Visual Storytelling“ stehen wird. Es findet statt am 27. April von 10 bis 17 Uhr im Literaturhaus Stuttgart.
