Opening keynote speaker will be Ülo Pikkov, author of: “Animasophy – Theoretical Writings on the Animated Film.“

“By developing ‘animasophy’, a more philosophical approach in the practice and critique of animation, we are developing something that is quintessentially human. In contrast to other mammals, the human kind is capable of abstract thinking. Birds and animals live in the present, but a human being can represent both the past and the future, construct symbols and tell stories. Men are the only mammals who can be fascinated by abstract texts, by playing with dolls or by the drama of an animated film. Therefore, we could say that animasophy embodies the essence of our humanity.”

The symposium is free to attend for anybody with a professional accreditation or festival pass for either the ITFS or FMX. Day tickets for the symposium only will also be available for 15 Euro at the box office on April 25.

Bei der seit 2013 stattfindende Symposiumsreihe Expanded Animation tauscht sich eine internationale Community von Studierenden, Lehrenden, KünstlerInnen und TheoretikerInnen über die Entgrenzungen, Randgebiete sowie Trends und künftige Entwicklungen in der Computeranimation aus. Zur Sprache und auf den Screen kommen dabei insbesondere experimentelle und hybride Formen in einem breiten und interdisziplinären Feld von Kunst, Industrie, Forschung und Wissenschaft.

Die 3. Ausgabe des Symposiums Expanded Animation findet am 4. und 5. September unter dem Motto Abweichungen und Anomalien im Zusammenspiel von Kunst und Technologie statt. Erneut werden die Ausfransungen in der Computeranimation ins Zentrum gerückt und im Speziellen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Animation und Technologie in den Blick genommen.

Unter den diesjährigen Vortragenden sind: Prix Ars Electronica 2015 Gewinner in der Kategorie Computer Animation/Film/VFX und Sebastian Buerkner, Mark Chavez, Ina Conradi, Devine Lu Linvega, Erick Oh, Anezka Sebek & Romain Tardy.

Organisiert wird das Symposium vom Department Digitale Medien der FH OÖ Campus Hagenberg und Ars Electronica.

Comic characters and stories serve as source material for major Hollywood blockbusters. Films are accompanied by comic adaptations and/or novelizations. Very often films are being promoted in a trans-media campaign, which includes prequels, sequels and side projects in the form of animation, comics or books.

There is also a rich history of adaptations of classic and contemporary literature for independent animated short films or animated feature films.The rapidly growing graphic novel field also provides an abundance of examples of literature adaptations.

The symposium invites abstracts for 20-minute presentations and welcomes proposals on all aspects of adaptation in literature, comics (graphic novels) and animation/film. Proposals, which relate to the symposium topics in the wider sense will be preferred.

Topics can include, but are not limited to:

– Adaptations of written literature for comics and/or animation/film
– Adaptations of comics and graphic novels as animation or live action films
– Adaptations of films for written literature or comics
– Influence of comics on animation and vice versa: historic and current
– Comic adaptations of life action and animation films
– Adaptations for games
– Hybrid forms of written literature and comics/animation
– Animated poetry
– Analysis and comparisons of narrative structures in literature, comics and animation
– Avantgarde approaches of combing and re-inventing the media in new context

Call for Papers: «Animationsfilm»

Montage AV. Zeitschrift für Theorie und Geschichte audiovisueller Kommunikation

Die Zeiten, in denen man die wissenschaftliche Marginalisierung des Animationsfilms beklagen musste, sind vorbei; im Zeitalter des digitalen Hybridfilms ist er zu einer zentralen Aufgabe der Filmwissenschaft geworden. Mehr noch: Es zeigt sich, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit Animation einen frischen Blick auch auf alte Probleme und Fragen zum Bewegtbild ermöglicht.

Der Animationsfilm ist ein vielseitiges und heterogenes Forschungsfeld, das erst in Ansätzen erschlossen ist. So zählen im Bereich Film und Fernsehen nicht nur analoge und digitale Visual und Special Effects, narrative Kurzfilme, Langfilme und Serien dazu sondern auch Experimentalfilme, Werbeclips, Vorspanne, Musikvideos und Visualisierungen in Nachrichtenbeiträgen, Dokumentar- oder Lehrfilmen.

Im geplanten Themenheft wollen wir Grundlegendes zum Animationsfilm herausarbeiten, ohne essentialistische Definitionen und Abgrenzungen zu wiederholen, wie sie seit Ende der 1980er Jahre diskutiert wurden. Uns geht es um historische und systematische Perspektiven einer filmwissenschaftlich geprägten Animationsforschung. So sollen bislang vernachlässigte KünstlerInnen, Produktionstraditionen, Strömungen und Genres ebenso wie Theorien der Animation in den Blick genommen werden. Das systematische Interesse zielt auf die für Animationsfilme charakteristischen Muster, Darstellungsstrategien und Kontexte – auf spezifische Denkfiguren, metareferentielle Motive, Erzählstrukturen, Figurenrepertoires und Stilistiken ebenso wie auf die typischen Bedingungen der Produktion, Distribution und Rezeption. Wir sind an Fallstudien und Porträts, Einzelfilmanalysen und Überblicksarbeiten ebenso interessiert wie an Beiträgen, die sich dem Animationsfilm mit innovativen Ansätzen nähern.

Das Heft «Animationsfilm» wird von den GastherausgeberInnen Erwin Feyersinger und Maike Sarah Reinerth, beide SprecherInnen der AG Animation in der Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaft, gemeinsam mit Frank Kessler und Jörg Schweinitz betreut.

Die Redaktion freut sich über die Einreichung von Texten mit maximal 35.000 Zeichen, die den Vorgaben des Stylesheets der Zeitschrift entsprechen (http://www.montage-av.de/Stylesheet_fuer_Autoren.pdf). Kürzere, pointierte Texte, die neue Fragestellungen eröffnen, sind ebenfalls willkommen (ca. 15.000 Zeichen).

Change and Continuity: Interdisciplinary Aspects of Animation, Comics and Literature

An academic symposium at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film 2013 in collaboration with the Society for Animation Studies, the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, the Institute of Media Studies at Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen, the AG Animation and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart.

This one-day symposium welcomes papers, which negotiate cross-media developments and interdisciplinarity in the fields of written literature, graphic novels and animation. These fields have provided a continuous source for mutual inspiration since the very beginning of each medium.

Today comic characters and stories not only serve as source material for major Hollywood blockbusters, but the forms also undergo a continuous transformation in commercial and avant-garde art: New hybrid forms are emerging, which creatively combine narrative aspects and formal elements in entirely new ways.

The symposium invites abstracts for 20-minute presentations and welcomes proposals on all aspects of cross-disciplinary influences and relations between literature, comics (graphic novels) and animation/film.
